"My Dearest Darkest" by Kayla Cottingham

"Monsters are real, and ghosts are real too. They live inside us, and sometimes, they win."

~Stephen King

The Ulalume Academy is a private girl's school where only the best of the best are accepted.

After Finch Chamberlin's audition, her parents begin the drive home, however fate has other plans for her. The accident should have left her dead, along with her parents. But something as old as the town itself rescued her, is calling to her, wanting her to be in Rainwater.

Selena St. Clair is one of the most popular girls at Ulalume Academy. She keeps people at a safe distance, but once she meets Finch for a second time, she feels her own calling toward the girl with white streaks in her hair, the complexion of a ghost and the faintest heartbeat Selena has ever heard on another person.

Selena and Finch may be polar opposites, but the thing calling Finch toward Rainwater and the Ulalume Academy is the same thing propelling Selena's group of friends toward a fate worse than death, but not a fate that will end in death, but in complete and total loss of themselves, and the town of Rainwater.

I had originally planned this book to be the first one I read for my October Spooky Reads TBR, but after finishing "Fairy Tale" by Stephen King and still having two days of September left, I decided to start it. I finished it within 24 hours of starting it and quite honestly, it was the perfect segue from September into October.

Finch is the nerdy, awkward, weird Main Character and the second half of our main cast. She perfectly embodies the awkward new girl stereotype, where as Selena is the epitome of boss babe and popular girl. The supporting cast are made up of POC and representation of the LGBTQ+ community is throughout the entire book.

"My Dearest Darkest" is a fun, dark, YA thriller that will lead readers through the halls of a private school and into the depths beneath that house a mysterious entity that wants nothing more than extreme and total power.
