"14 Ways to Die" by Vincent Ralph

When Jessica was seven years old, her mother was the first of 13 victims killed by the serial killer who would be known as The Magpie Man.

Ten years later, she is now out to find the serial killer and show him he did not break her the way he had hoped.

When an opporutnity comes up to be documented once a week on Monday through a media known as The Eye, she jumps at it. This could be the way to solve her mother's murder -- and the other 12 -- and find The Magpie Man once and for all.

But not all is okay in the land of technology, and soon Jessica learns that those closest to you can carry the biggest secrets. From meeting with other victims, to living through two more murders, we can follow Jessica along with the viewers of her weekly docu-series. Told in short, intense chapters that will leave you devouring the book, "14 Ways to Die" is a book to die for.

I don't remember ever reading a book with such short chapters before. I didn't know what to expect from Vincent Ralph (this is his debut novel) but he kept my attention until the very last page. Living in a technology-laced environment and generation, it can be hard to remember what is real and what is not. Jessica's story touches on just that -- who do you trust and who do you suspect when it comes to your entire world being upheaved and shaken until nothing is left but sorrow, grief and broken pieces?

Jessica's story is one that will stay with you long after the end of the book. At first, I didn't trust her as a narrator, but eventually, she won me over. I can't wait to read another of Vincent Ralph's stories soon.
