"House of Hollow" by Krystal Sutherland

"Cate told me that the three of us were all born in the middle of storms. Grey was lightning, Vivi was thunder, and I was the sea in a tempest."

~Iris Hollow

Ten years ago, the Hollow sisters disappeared on a street in Scotland. They were celebrating New Years' Eve with their father's parents. Gabe and Cate leaned in for a kiss to welcome in the New Year, while their three daughters disappeared without a trace.

A month later, the Hollow sisters were returned. They arrived back on the street, naked, the eldest clutching a knife. They appeared normal, yet after a few months, things changed. Their dark lightened to white. Their bright, blue eyes turned black. Baby teeth that had fallen out were now back, only to fall out again a few months later. The only injury caused? The scar of a half-moon near their collarbone.

Gabe Hollow knew his daughters were not who they claimed. Grey, the eldest, was now wild and carefree, yet moody and isolated, full of dark fairy tales. Vivi, the middle, was full of punk rock dust and attitude. Iris, the youngest, full of the want and need to just have a normal life. Yet, Gabe knows. Gabe knows his little girls and Gabe knew, before his death, that these three girls returned to him and Cate were not his daughters. They were monsters.

Now, ten years later, the eldest Hollow has disappeared once again. Vivi and Iris team together with Grey's boyfriend Tyler in an effort to stop dark forces hellbent on destroying the sisters for good.

"House of Hollow" takes the reader on a dark fantasy ride filled with questioning and magic. You never know who to trust until the very end, when you realize you cannot trust anybody, because they are not who you were introduced to them as.

This book took me into a dying forest and spit me out in a way I never expected from the story. I met characters I never thought possible to exist, yet it made complete sense for them to. I found doors that lead somewhere once and now lead somewhere else and went through them with zero hesitation, following Iris as she finds who -- and what -- she truly is.
